Internships & Fellowships

The Alliance Theatre’s Internship Program offers a rich and challenging experience for qualified college students and recent graduates who are actively pursuing careers in professional theatre. Intended to serve as a bridge between one’s collegiate and professional lives, Alliance Internships provide hands-on experiences in the day-to-day workings of a professional theatre. Interns have the opportunity to refine their practical and critical thinking skills through close interaction with Alliance staff and artists. Alliance internships require that each intern be mature, self-reliant, articulate, able to work effectively in a highly collaborative environment, and able to demonstrate competence in his or her specific area of interest.

All internships are paid. Academic credit is awarded at the discretion of the intern’s college or university. The Alliance Theatre does not provide housing or housing stipends. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. Alliance Theatre is an equal opportunity employer.

 

Spelman Internship & Fellowship Program

The not-for-profit cultural sector is challenged by a lack of diversity in its top leadership roles. This situation is not attributable to a lack of capable candidates for leadership but is due to a lack of intentional cultivation of prospective leaders of color, particularly by larger institutions. In order to address these challenges and provide the national field with an annually growing pool of highly qualified candidates, the Alliance Theatre launched the Spelman Leadership Fellows Program in 2016.

This program is the first mentorship program of its kind partnering a regional theatre with an HBCU (Historically Black College and University), guaranteed paid part-time employment to three Spelman seniors, and full-time post-graduate employment for 1 year to a Fellow. Each participant completes their time at the Alliance with a resume of work experience at one of the largest regional theatres in the country and an expanded network of connections, all in their early 20s. The goal – to invest in the next generation of Black non-binary people and women putting an end to the excuse that there are none with the skillsets needed to occupy the c-suites of for-profits, non-profits, and government agencies.

 

Alliance Theatre Spelman Leadership Internship

The Spelman Leadership Internship program is a 9-month learning opportunity where Spelman seniors work 10 hours a week learning about things such as arts administration, theater management, marketing, development, education, and production. Interns will be immersed in various departments for a designated amount of time and learn from a working professional in that field. Throughout their internship, interns will have access to professional rehearsal rooms, community engagement events, board meetings, auditions, and other Alliance events. Interns will rotate through the theater in 4-6 week increments across departments guided by department leadership and managers to complete meaningful tasks, projects, and assignments. Rotations include personal meet-and greet sessions facilitated by Program Co-Directors featuring key members of that department.

Interns should expect to work 10 hours per week and receive $15/hr.

Internships begin August 2024 and conclude May 2025.

Alliance Theatre Spelman Leadership Fellowship

Current Spelman interns are eligible to apply for a one year, full time fellowship at the Alliance following the conclusion of the internship program. The fellowship is designed to give participants experience in artistic or executive leadership in the not-for-profit cultural sector and will be tailored to support the interests of the recipient.

Fellow should expect to work full-time at a competitive annual salary.

Fellowship begins June 1, 2024 and concludes May 31, 2025.

National Vision BIPOC Stage Management Fellowship

Candidates must 1) identify as a BIPOC theater maker, 2) be in their final year or have graduated from a Stage Management program in the past 3 years, and 3) be willing to relocate to Atlanta, Georgia for the fellowship.

Kenny Leon Directing Fellowship

We are committed to training the next generation of creative, passionate arts professionals by building pathways to careers in the arts for candidates underrepresented in the field of directing. Inspired by the trailblazing directorial career of Kenny Leon, this Fellowship is designed for early to mid-career directors who are looking to deepen their practical experience of working within a professional theatre organization while honing their craft, developing newfound skills, and building a network with industry leaders.   

The Kenny Leon Assistant Director Fellow will work closely with a director on one of the Alliance Theater’s productions during the (24-25) season. The qualifying candidate will have the opportunity to meet with Artistic Directors Tinashe Kajese-Bolden and Chris Moses, to artistically match the candidate with an upcoming production. They will join virtual pre-production meetings and join the company in person for rehearsals, and tech. The Kenny Leon Assistant Director Fellow will gain an intimate look into how Directors synthesize dynamics between all creative departments and manage time within truncated rehearsal processes. The fellow will report directly to the BOLD Associate Artistic Director.
