WRITTEN BY Neeley Gossett & Steve Coulter
DIRECTED BY Rosemary Newcott
In the beloved children’s novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Alice finds herself in a world full of strange and wondrous incongruities…much like what the world is like for most middle school students! Atlanta Playwright and Alliance/Kendeda Playwriting Competition finalist Neeley Gossett’s modern take on the story finds Alice on her first day as a 7th grader in a new middle school. Gossett is able to tap into a dark humor that is especially satisfying and very connected to the nightmare and folly that is both Wonderland and Middle School. Written for and with middle schoolers, Alice Between will be performed in the Rich Auditorium at the Woodruff Arts Center. (best for ages 9+)
1:30 p.m., Rich Theater
*Must have pre-registered online for this performance at www.woodruffcenter.org/familyfun . All patrons must be seated by 1:20 p.m. or they are not guaranteed a seat.
Inspired by the award-winning Ashley Bryan picture book, this rhythmic play explores the universal idea that true beauty is found within. Adapted from a Zambian folk tale, this story traces Blackbird’s courageous journey to share his truth that “color on the outside is not what’s on the inside.” Featuring an original jazzy score and inventive creative movement, Beautiful Blackbird brings Ashley Bryan’s inspired artwork to life in visceral and moving ways. Beautiful Blackbird is presented in conjunction with the High Museum of Art exhibition Painter and Poet: The Wonderful World of Ashley Bryan.
1, 2:15 and 3:30 p.m., Black Box Theater
