LIZ DIAMOND is the Resident Director of Yale Repertory Theatre, Chair of Directing at Yale School of Drama, and directs new and classical plays at theatres across the United States. Liz has directed premieres of works by playwrights including Octavio Solis, Marcus Gardley, Nilo Cruz, and Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney. Her long-term collaboration with playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, begun in 1988, includes award winning productions of The America Play, The Death of the Last Black Man in the Whole Entire World, Betting on the Dust Commander, Imperceptible Mutabilities in the Third Kingdom, and Father Comes Home From the Wars. Classical and modern productions include works by Brecht, Stravinsky, Strindberg, Racine, Molière, Shakespeare, and Euripides. Liz has been awarded the OBIE and the Connecticut Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Direction, and serves on the Executive Board of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers. Liz is currently developing a new project with actor and playwright Anna Deavere Smith.

ERIC BAUMGARTNER holds degrees in jazz studies from Berklee College of Music and DePaul University. He is thrilled to be returning to the Alliance after playing keyboard for Ever After. Other Atlanta-based theatrical work includes productions with The Center for Puppetry Arts, Clayton State University, Actor’s Express, Atlanta Jewish Academy, The Lovett School, Gainesville Theatre Alliance and Georgia Ensemble Theatre. Eric works as a composer, arranger and clinician for the Hal Leonard Corporation. He has dozens of published piano works including the popular Jazz Piano Basics series. As a clinician he has conducted piano teacher workshops throughout the US, Australia, England, Canada and Germany. Eric is the principle pianist for the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus. He also enjoys rockin’ the keyboards with the the bands Yacht Rock Schooner and A1A. 

CLAY BENNING has been the Alliance’s resident sound designer for 18 years and has designed more than 100 productions for the Alliance, including 29 world premieres, 31 musicals and 28 Theatre for Young Audiences productions. Recent works include Hospice, Winnie the Pooh, Native Guard and Candide. He’s also done design work at Georgia Shakespeare, Atlanta Ballet, Cincinnati Playhouse, Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Theatrical Outfit, Geva Theatre, Synchronicity Theatre and the Georgia Aquarium. Awards: Seven Suzi Bass awards for outstanding sound design with 14 nominations. Clay is a graduate of Presbyterian College (B.A.), the North Carolina School of the Arts (M.F.A.) and a member of IATSE/USA829 and TSDCA.

EMILY COATES is an award-winning dancer & choreographer (New York City Ballet, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Twyla Tharp, Yvonne Rainer). Recent commissions and venues: “Incarnations” (2017) and “A History of Light” (2018) both at Danspace Project, New York City; Works & Process at the Guggenheim; Wadsworth Atheneum; University of Chicago. Theater credits include “Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale” (2014, 2019, dir. Liz Diamond); “The Square Root of Three Sisters” (2016, dir. Dmitry Krymov). Coauthor with Sarah Demers of Physics & Dance (Yale University Press, 2019). She directs the dance studies concentration at Yale University, where she is associate professor in Theater and Performance Studies and in Directing at Yale School of Drama.

While in Boston he worked for various theatres, conservatories, and universities including American Repertory Theater, Boston Ballet, Moscow Ballet, the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company, and others. In his spare time, Fabian likes to paint watercolors or urban sketch. 

Born in 1949 in Tel Aviv, Israel, Kalman moved to Riverdale in New York’s Bronx borough with her family at age 4. Now a Manhattan resident, Kalman has written and illustrated 18 children’s books, including “Ooh-la-la-Max in Love,” “What Pete Ate,” “Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of the John J. Harvey,” “13 WORDS,” a collaboration with Lemony Snicket, “Why We Broke Up,” with Daniel Handler, “Looking at Lincoln” and “Thomas Jefferson Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Everything.”

She is a frequent contributor to The New Yorker magazine, and is well known for her collaboration with Rick Meyerowitz on the “New Yorkistan” cover in 2001. Additional projects include illustrating Strunk and White’s classic “The Elements of Style.” Kalman also created two monthly online columns for The New York Times. The first, “The Principles of Uncertainty” (2006-07), was a narrative journal of her life. The second, “And The Pursuit of Happiness” (2009), was a yearlong exploration of American history and democracy. Both columns are now collected in book form, published by the Penguin Press.

Kalman has had eight exhibitions at the Julie Saul Gallery since 2003. In 2010, The Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, organized a retrospective of Kalman’s work entitled “Maira Kalman: Various Illuminations (of a Crazy World),” which traveled to the Contemporary Jewish Museum (San Francisco, CA), the Skirball Cultural Center (Los Angeles, CA), and the Jewish Museum in NYC. Her work has appeared in books published by the Museum of Modern Art and the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, in connection with 2014 exhibition “Maira Kalman: My Favorite Things.” Her longstanding contributions to literature, art and design awarded her with the opportunity to serve as a resident at the American Academy in Rome and to present two renowned TED talks in 2007 and 2014. 

LIZ LEE always enjoys her work with the Alliance. Her previous designs include Goodnight, Tyler; Sheltered; Hand to God; Too Heavy for Your Pocket; Ugly Lies the Bone; Ethel; The C.A. Lyons Project; Steel Magnolias; In Love & Warcraft; The Whipping Man; God of Carnage; Sleuth; Cuttin’Up; Tick, Tick ... Boom!; and Top Dog/ Under Dog. Based in Atlanta, she was producer at the Center for Puppetry Arts for 20 years and continues as their resident lighting designer, most recently designing Beauty and the Beast and Harold and the Purple Crayon. 

LOUISA THOMPSON is a designer and a creator of theatrical work
for young audiences. She received the 2019 Obie award for Sustained Excellence as a Set Designer. She created Washeteria, a site- specific all-age event that featured the work of Cesar Alvarez and Charise Castro-Smith and New Victory Theatre LabWorks participant.
In addition to the 18 years she has taught at Hunter College, she has designed for a variety of theatres: Signature Theatre, Elevator Repair Service, Soho Repertory Theatre, The Play Company, Target Margin Theater, Clubbed Thumb, Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, Theatreworks USA, Playwrights Horizons, The Foundry Theater Company. Regional credits: The White Heron Theatre; Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Center Theatre Group, Arden Theatre, Bard Summerscape, The McCarter Theatre, The Papermill Playhouse, La Jolla Playhouse; The Children’s Theatre Company of Minneapolis. Louisa received a 2018 Lucille Lortel Award for her Set Design of In The Blood at Signature Theatre. She has degrees from Rhode Island School of Design (B.F.A.) and Yale School of Drama (M.F.A.) and is an Associate Professor in the Hunter College Department of Theatre. 

MIKE TUTAJ returns to the Alliance Theatre after having designed projections for Ride the Cyclone in 2019. He has designed previous iterations of Ride the Cyclone at ACT Theatre (Seattle), MCC Theater (New York), and Chicago Shakespeare Theater.
