The Alliance Theatre will be committing its 2017/18 season to a celebration of the city that so ably supports it. The 49th season will take place in different venues around the city while the current theater space at the Woodruff Arts Center undergoes a complete renovation, its first since the building opened in 1968.
“It never felt like the right choice to simply produce the off campus season in a single venue – or even in two venues that might approximate our two theatres,” said Susan V. Booth, Jennings Hertz Artistic Director. “We have a once-in-an-organizational-lifetime opportunity to truly be Atlanta’s theatre. For 48 years, metro Atlanta has supported us by making the trip to our front door. It seemed like we had the opportunity to return the favor, and to do so in a way that celebrated the best of Atlanta by taking our work to a slate of cultural venues across our city. If we do this work right, each work will feel inevitably matched to its venue, and we’ll be both taking our loyal supporters on a curated trip around their city, and meeting new audiences that we can hopefully bring home with us in the years ahead.”
The venue partners for the Alliance’s 2017/18 season span every corner of the Atlanta perimeter, from the Fulton County Southwest Arts Center and Porter Sanford III Performing Arts & Community Center on Atlanta’s Southside, to the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta and the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre on the Northside, and the venues in-between – Actor’s Express, Spelman College, Dad’s Garage, Atlanta Symphony Hall, Atlanta Botanical Garden, Atlanta History Center, The Galloway School, and the Conant Performing Arts Center at Oglethorpe University. If you were to drive to all the venues in one day, starting and ending at the Alliance’s home at the Woodruff Arts Center, you would cover 90 miles of diverse and eclectic Atlanta neighborhoods!
"It's a brave choice to go to a different venue for each production, and the Alliance Theatre Board of Directors is thrilled to be going on this journey in every corner of our city,” said Hala Moddelmog, President of the Atlanta Metro Chamber and incoming co-chair of the Alliance Theatre Board of Directors. “What better way to meet our neighbors than to perform where they are and invite them to come back with us when we return to our home. We're also excited to introduce our long time patrons to other cultural organizations they might not have had the opportunity to visit before."
The Alliance renovation project will include a complete transformation of the Alliance Stage, the theater’s rehearsal spaces, education spaces, and artist support spaces. The remodel of the Alliance Theatre will provide significant enhancements to the patron experience, technology, and infrastructure.
The Alliance plans to return to its new theater space, which will include the renamed Coca-Cola Stage, in time for its 50th anniversary season in late 2018.
In addition to off-site productions, the Alliance Education department will embed itself in the communities with which we’re partnering by offering acting classes, summer camps, and in-school residencies at select satellite locations. The expansion of Alliance Education programs into the greater Atlanta community began in the 2016/17 season and have paved the way for the large scale productions that will take place during the 2017/18 season. Classes and camps will also continue to be held at the Woodruff Arts Center during the off-site season.
