Arts for Learning Lessons Research

Arts for Learning Lessons Research

  • Arts for Learning (A4L) Lessons is an innovative national literacy program, proven since 2006 to be effective in helping students develop and enhance important skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening through the integration of multiple art forms.

  • The Georgia Arts for Learning Lessons program has been a component of Young Audiences, Inc. National Research plan from 2009-2012 as well as a distinctive component of literacy programs targeting the needs of the Georgia learning communities.  Data assessment at the national level was conducted by WestEd, an independent educational research, development and service organization. All other data was analyzed by independent literacy and learning researchers from Roanoke College. A sample of the findings include the following: Students showed strong gains from pre-test to post-test with English language learners and students reading below grade level making significant literacy gains. Also, the impact of the A4L Lessons program on teachers was positive and indicated that their participation in the program caused them to reflect on their beliefs about teaching and learning and most significantly, it caused them to change their instructional practice.

  • The methodologies used to obtain these results include on-line pre-and post-surveys for classroom teachers, pre-and post-student tests and surveys, classroom observations and focus groups using structured protocols. Student work samples as recorded in the A4L Lessons Student notebooks were used as formative assessments for determining a student’s level of proficiency in each literacy concept at designated points over the course of an instructional unit.
